This course introduces students to basic concepts in the study of language which will be necessary for the understanding of linguistic courses offered by the Department in subsequent years. Students will be made aware of the sophisticated properties of human language in relation to features of animal communication. The evolution of human language will be traced in terms of language families and typologies. The course will also discuss language in relation to culture. We will cover the basic concepts relevant to morphology, syntax, semantics, phonetics and phonology.
