Course Description

This course provides students with an introduction to population dynamics, the process by which populations change. The course emphasizes the population dynamics in relation to fertility, mortality and migration related aspects. It further focuses on emerging issues as a result of population dynamics and  related policy implications.

Lecturer : Ms. Neranjala Sumathipala
Assistant Lecturer : Ms. Isuru Kalansooriya

Course Description
This is an introductory course in statistics designed to provide students with the basic concepts of data analysis and statistical computing. The course also provide a strong statistical base for students to carry out technical analysis in subsequent years in the discipline of Demography. The course covers introduction to statistics, sampling and measurements, descriptive statistics, probability distributions and fundamentals on statistical inferences.

                                                                        Course Description

This course focuses on the evolution of population theories and provides a sound knowledge on theories related to mortality, fertility and migration. The course guides the student to analyze different views that have emerged with regard to these theories, and critically evaluate their relevance for analyzing population dynamics and related issues in different contexts.

Learning outcomes:

On the successful completion of the course student will be able to:

• Identify the evolution of population theories and its determinants
• Review different theories of population connected to mortality, fertility and migration
• Analyze the contrasting views that have emerged in relation to these theories
• Evaluate the applicability of population theories
